Product Description

Product Description

Time Commanders, the TV game show from the BBC and Lion Television, features teams of contestants battling against a computer loaded with the tactics of the greatest military minds of all time. With famous battles from history and contestants from all walks of life - while members of the public try to control one army through a computer simulation, the other army acts as we know from the sources that it did - the show has proved popular. Time Commanders: Great Battles of the Ancient World covers sixteen battles of the Ancient World: from Caesar to Spartacus; from the Hittites to the Carthaginians; from Boudicca to Attila the Hun; from Alexander the Great to Rameses II. The book also includes information on the main protagonists, the weapons of war, improving technology and the sources. With graphics from the show and a timeline showing the worldwide background to each battle, relevant websites and a good bibliography, this is much more than a TV tie-in - it is a truly accessible history reference book for adults and children alike.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor book, 26 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This is a poor book. There are no maps to show the troops deployment. There is a limited amount on the actual tactics and too much about the political background. There is too much repitition, particularly about the Roman army. Don't waste your money buy any of the Wordsworth Military Series instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars bringing to life battles of the ancient world. , 23 Oct 2006
By robert smith "smythe" (birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed this book, as it gave a very good try at summing up the political and military circumstances of the times. It had good profiles on generals, and a good overview of the situation. I was pleased that it consigned the TV results to an appendix, as I am more interested in what actually happened. The reason why I gave this book 4 stars instead of five is that I would have prefered a more detailed section of the course of the battle. In many cases having explained the political background over a few pages, the book spends only a paragraph on the actual battle. Other than this, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the boook
