'Topping's terrific tome adopts the perfect attitude to this fizzing phenomenon... He rattles through each episode with focus on teen-angst metaphors, the brilliant feminist subtexts, and the dazzling use of "valley speak"... Colour me stunned' Uncut 'An aide-memoire, a squire to the Buffyverse and an exciting resource of bitchy lines rolled into one. Fans will adore it' TV Zone

Product Description

Vampires, passion, teenage angst, cigarettes and alcohol, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Whether you're a seasoned Slayerette, a Scooby groupie or a novice, this book offers you a guide to the surreal world of Sunnydale. Despite its change of network and the lead character having died, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s literal representation of teenage horrors still touches on a universal truth. In this unofficial guide, the author analyses season six, discussing it episode by episode and presenting the highlights in categories such as: a little learning is a dangerous thing; I just love your accent; and it's a designer label. He unearths pop culture references, draws attention to the occasions when logic flies out of the window, discusses the themes covered from season one to five and includes sections on the series creator Joss Whedon, the novels and the websites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keith Topping does it again!, 10 Feb 2003
By Ms. M. J. Pratt (Wales, U.K.) - See all my reviews
Owners of the previous 'Slayer' volume - covering seasons one to five of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - will have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book (I know I certainly have!) and will not be disappointed.

This volume covers season six of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and has synopses, background information, pop culture references, information on the music featured, gossip etc. for every episode in the season. Do not be concerned by the fact that this book only covers one season, as it in fact gives quite a bit more information per episode than the previous volume (presumably to fill it up, but hey, I'm not complaining!), and, as with the previous volume, has general information about internet sites etc for the series at the end.

Essential for Buffy fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars A top-notch guide to Buffy's most difficult season, 31 Jan 2003
By S. Matthewman (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rather than expanding a fourth edition of "Slayer" to cover the first six seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Slayer:TNG uses the single-volume format to analyse each episode, and some of the season's ongoing themes, to a greater extent than an all-encompassing guide could have hoped to do.

Such a book is this is almost prerequisite reading material if you hope to catch all of the pop-culture references that litter nearly every scene of the series. Slayer:TNG highlights all the ones you probably spotted yourself, along with countless more -- although bizarrely there's no mention of "Soylent Green" in the summary of the what's-in-the-burger episode, Doublemeat Palace, or of the Chuck Jones/Looney Tunes references in the tapdancing demon, Sweet, from the outrageously showbiz musical episode "Once More, With Feeling".

The expanded space also allows Topping to dissect the argument about the death of Tara, one half of the only lesbian couple on American TV at that point. Detractors claimed that her death was "homophobic". Much of the argument for and against this proposal is collated and summarised here: the author rightly leaves it up to you to decide whether or not it's the case in your mind.

In short, if you're watching a Season Six episode and don't have Slayer:TNG to hand, you're not doing it right. :)
