Product Description

Product Description
This guide offers straightforward advice for those about to embark on an e-commerce venture and those who wish to maximize the potential of a current website.

From the Author
All the business know-how to turn a profit from e-commerce.
In the five months that it took to write and edit this work, the world of e-Commerce of course moved forward dramatically. "Of course", because we've all become familiar with the speed of change on the Internet. So how is it that none of us ever seem to get familiar with developing our businesses at the same speed? I suppose that in many senses, that was the starting point for this book - just how can the entrepreneur keep up?

Overcoming this madness was my main goal in writing this book. I hope I have simplified the choices, and reduced the risks of entreprenurship in e-Commerce.

This book should arm you with all the business know-how and net-savvy to turn a profit from e-Commerce. It shows you how to take the plunge into the fast and competitive world of e-Commerce, without losing sight of the main goal - financial gain. Working in phases, it introduces you to e-customers, e-competitors and e-suppliers. It takes you through practical steps to get online, and to stay there, profitably. Simple guides, simple diagrams, simple strategies. It also helps you to avoid the traps of conventional thinking.

When you've read it, you'll see that e-Commerce doesn't change everything, but it does change a lot. The way you work, serve customers, innovate and compete. These are business methods - real world activities, not technologies. So find out how to practice e-Commerce before your competitors do!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well planned, elegantly written and clearly explained, 2 Mar 2001
Timothy has a knack of explaning complex issues in a very concise and simple way. As indicated in the book, many business opportunities and issues are continuously chainging and business needs to understand and prepare for the unexpected.

This book clarified the online business landscape and enhanced my understanding of the e-business.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadfully superficial, particularly on technical aspects, 1 May 2005
The book is a well-composed collection of "common knowledge" about "How-tos" on starting a small business. This is useful as it provides a quick overwiew on the commonalities of the subject. Good for absolute beginners and non-academical readers.

Considering this audience's needs, what follows in the section on technical matters is rather irresponsible: almost ANY book on E-commerce technology would do a better job. You*re basically told 'Just use an ISP who provides strong encrypteion and you'll be fine'. Although encryption may help, it's really not that easy...! The author, obviously unable to tell a Hacker (programmer) from a *cracker* (intruder, illegally breaking into computers), spreads dangerous "half knowledge" about IT security. If anybody followed this meager "advice" they might find themselves in trouble once they actually set up their e-business and are faced with real-world threats to systems security and protecting their customers' data (which, by the way, is a statutory duty of any business). Better read 'Firewalling and IT Security' from O'Reilly Associates or a similar book or ask a pro to help you out. Recommending to find outside help in case a subject is beyond the reader's knowledge would have been much better advice instead of those shallow collections of free internet links to IT security sources.

Having said that, I am not even sure if I should recommend a book like that for the other subjects covered there. Better get higher-quality books on each of those subjects elsewhere. There's lots of computing, business and accounting literature doing a much better job.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathe of fresh air, 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Tim Cumming's book talks commonsense about the internet. Where most dotcom books get overexcited about their latest theory, Tim seems to be sensible, honest and realistic.

This does not mean that Tim is not enthusiastic; on the contrary. What we get is a book that makes sense to the reader. His writing style is light but effective.

I was impressed by this book and it has made me rethink several parts of our business.

The Richard Branson foreword is the same foreword he has given to a series of books. So there is no evidence he has actually read the actual book. This should be noted. Read more
