Amazon.co.uk Review
Following his success as stand-up comic and theatrical performer, Eddie Izzard has turned his attentions to the written word. His first book, Dress to Kill, is a series of conversations with writer/presenter David Quantick that claim to reach "deep inside the most original head in Britain". Presented as a mixture of opinion and autobiography, Dress to Kill is a riveting, witty read that features a number of stunning photographs by Steve Double. These capture Izzard on and off the stage in London, New York and San Francisco, illustrating the subject's colourful persona, not to mention vast wardrobe and astonishing array of nail varnishes.

Izzard employs his unique conversational style to describe his journey from his birth in South Yemen through his itinerant childhood to coming out as a transvestite, and finally becoming a comic, media personality and film star. Those who have seen Izzard perform will immediately recognise the digressive meandering of his stream-of-consciousness anecdotes and monologues. Using this to great effect while discussing such topics as comedy, popular culture, sexuality and hairy mammals, he generally succeeds in firing the imagination. However, as anyone who has seen his shows and is later asked to "repeat one of his jokes" will discover, delivery of his material is of the essence. Confessing at the end of the book that he doesn't write his act down, we discover why, as occasionally it fails to transfer to the written page.

Although not as incisive as the bold claim on the inlay, Dress to Kill reveals the world of and according to Eddie Izzard, a world fascinating and humorous enough to be enjoyed by a much wider audience than his current fan base. --Robert Brookes

The Express
'Dress to Kill would make an excellent present for fans of this consistently outstanding and original comic: a sort of semi-ghosted autobiography with riffs about life, the universe and everything and a lot of photos, ranging from hilarious ones from the great man's childhood, and slightly embarrassing ones showing the grown-up Eddie being all dangerous and ambiguous in high heels and nail polish.' (Evening Standard) REVIEW 'From stealing lipstick at 15 to his first painful outing in high heels, comedian Eddie Izzard describes how he came to terms with being a transvestite.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A strange & fascinating journey ..., 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Anyone familiar with Izzard's live act will find comfort in the customary style of the nine monologues, which comprise this volume. His organic meanderings take you on a surreal and fascinating journey of word-association, circuiting the comedian's family background, unique career trajectory and creative inspirations. Interspersed throughout are scenic asides from the world of entertainment and history. Izzard's refusal to be confined by convention could run the risk of descending into diatribe, but his curious logic keeps the flavour effervescent. The brilliance lies in his ability to weave a wandering narrative around a series of seemingly unrelated anecdotes, often ending up right back where he started, but his unique ability to be simultaneously random and relevant means that the reader never feels that his unpredictable shifts of focus are overly contrived. Ok, you may not care that you don't know about the ice-cream kiosk near where Spike Milligan was stationed during the war, and you may not have given a great deal of thought to the blue-print behind mammalian hair patterning, but invest a little time in the Izzard method of explication and you will be entertained and enlightened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Izzard the finest comedian of his Genaration, 9 May 2001
By A Customer
Forget overrated TV comics Graham Norton, Harry hill, paul merton etc.

Eddie Izzard is the best most oringinal, funnest comedian if his Genration up there with Tommy cooper, he has a real soul, heart and is a genuine person too this brillant book that takes him through his childhood to his Dress to Kill show speaks volumes Eddie is a real genuis, I like to see it updated since the was written 3 years ago Eddie's carrer has gone from Strength to strength his sell out rave reviewed world tour of his last show Circle which followed on from his double award winning Dress to kill show and his forthcoming Hollywood bloackbuster's The cats meow and All the Queens Men and now Artisic Director of Amnesty Internatinal.

this is one hell of a read.

A update please
