Amazon.co.uk Review
From their arrival at the forefront of the late-1980s "Madchester" phenomenon with their classic second single "The Only One I Know", the Charlatans have developed into one of the most reliable and enjoyable bands in the UK. However, despite being the only UK band to have produced four No. 1 albums in the '90s, and despite enjoying increasing fame in Europe, USA and Japan, considerably less is known about the group than more media-favoured acts such as, for example, fellow Mancunians Oasis. The present book, a detailed chronological account of their history, written with the full co-operation of its members, (and with a charming foreword from front man Tim Burgess), represents an excellent attempt at rectifying this situation.
The story that emerges in this well-written and sometimes brutally-honest book is one that often shocks. Following the group's initial success came misguided and over-produced recording sessions; financial disasters as they were "ripped off" by their trusted accountants; and various breakdowns and legal traumas--a run of appalling ill fortune that was to culminate in the road-accident death of their keyboard-player, the talented Rob Collins. However, despite such extreme difficulties, the interviews with the group, their management and assorted friends, reveals a thoroughly likeable collection of musicians, whose talent, determination and belief in what Tim Burgess describes as the "Charlatans FOREVER!" ethos make the increased critical and commercial success detailed in the book's closing chapters hugely satisfying for the reader. Illustrated with many rare and excellently presented photographs, and including a detailed and accurate discography, this book is thus highly recommended both for existing Charlatans fans, and for those looking for an inspiring tale of success against often suffocating odds. --Steve Price

The Charlatans emerged from Manchester in the early 90s and quickly became one of the biggest bands on the UK rock scene, with one of the most committed and die-hard fan bases. These fans have stuck by the band through thick and thin, including some extraordinary episodes in the band's fortunes, not least the imprisonment for armed robbery of keyboard player Rob Collins, who on his release from jail was killed in a drink-driving accident. The band's tenacity and persistence in the face of adversity have now been rewarded, they have had two UK number one albums and they are much-lauded in both the USA and Japan.
