Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As Dennis Bergkamp placed the ball on the spot the full implications of the penalty hadn't hit me. Looking back, I can see that I was facing one of the most important moments of my career with United. If he'd scored we would have been knocked out of the FA Cup and I don't think we would have won the Premiership.
Peter Schmeichel's responses in such moments were invariably flawless and his place in United folklore was confirmed before that crucial save against Arsenal in a pulsating semi-final at Villa Park. He had already won 12 trophies as he approached the end of his eighth and final season at Manchester United and was widely regarded as the world's best goalkeeper. Given Schmeichel's achievements, including Denmark's 1992 European Championship triumph, you would expect his autobiography to be a mere chronicle of his successes, something strictly for afficionados of the United or Danish variety. While he doesn't fail that category of reader, Schmeichel balances his account with reflections on some of his lower points, from his confrontations with Ian Wright--"I was on the brink of becoming the first player in the history of the Premier League to be charged with racist behaviour"--to the protracted transfer negotiations between United and Brondby that jeopardised his move to Manchester in 1991. Schmeichel also gives a revealing insight into his relationships with Eric Cantona and Sir Alex Ferguson, the latter regarding the Dane as "the buy ofthe century". Worth a read, this one. --Jamie Foulerton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Daily Telegraph

The Great Dane gave the impression on the pitch of being forthright... his autobiography does little to dispel that impression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Peter Schmeichel`s autobiography, 30 Nov 2000
By a_scawn@yahoo.co.uk (Cornwall, Englang) - See all my reviews
At last the greatest goalkeeper and pharhaps Manchester United player gives us his autobiography, in which he writes whole chapters about Eric Cantona, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Ian Wright episode. He also looks back briefly on his childhood, and fond memories of his time at Brondby and Denmarks 1992 European cup victory. When reading his autobiography, its very clear that Schmeichel is confident in himself but looking at his career is it any wonder? After reading of the treble and key moments,he describes the 98 World cup and says farewell to England. The back of the book has around 25 pages (depending on paperback or hardback) showing his career record. Peter Schmeichel`s autobiography is a fantastic evaluation and credit to him, and is well recommended to both Manchester United fans as well as fans of the sport. Its unlikely you will regret buying his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Comepelling & Factual book about his illustrious career, 1 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Peter Schmeichel was seen as an idol to me, for goalkeeping attributes. This book offers large amounts information on his character and the events in his footballing career. The importance that Schmeichel would have on the Man Utd side from 1991 was unbelievable and unknown, but what Alex Ferguson claimed as to be his most succesful buy of his managing career spoke for it self.

A true giant among al goalkeepers both on and off the pitch showing honest character to all players despite his mouthing in the 16 yard box. Also an entire chapter to his controversial claims of racism towards Ian Wright. True spirit to what Peter Schmeichel has done at United.

What "Schmeichel The Autobiography" is about is his determination and skills in goal in his career and off the pitch. A brilliant read for any upcoming goalkeepers aswell as any football fanatic.

This book is a must for any Schmeichel fan. It follows his career from Hvidore to the hights he reached at United. There is also a section devoted to his time at the 1998 world cup. Great book.
