Product Description

Review
An attractive series of books describing a year in the life of these four animals, designed to be read aloud to a young child and shared with an older one. They concentrate on mating and reproduction and some of the writing is sugary to the point of making the adult reader stifle giggles:'The buck climbs on to mate. Afterwards he topples over, roly poly, onto the ground beside her. They relax quietly side by side, a soft browny grey bundle in the long green grass.' This is Mills and Boon stuff; the other animal matings are less humanized (particularly the frog) but similarly lingered over in soft focus. Whether or not this is a scientifically based study of animal behaviour these books are beautifully illustrated (a full page on alternate pages plus numerous small sketches) and are written with a warmth young children will love. At the end of each book there is additional factual information that can't be incorporated into the 'story', including a list of specific words related to the animal and their meanings, tips on how to watch the animals, where to find them and how to recognize different types. There is also a list of facts about the animal, such as its scientific name, its size, average weight, habitat, special characteristics and a list of contact addresses for associations connected with the animal. If an older child picked up the book they might find the story part a little babyish, but would be interested enough to want to find out more. (Kirkus UK)
