Another story featuring Callie Anson Church of England Curate and her growing relationship with Mark Lombardi a policeman. The book opens with the unexplained death of the young child of celebrity couple Jodee and Chazz. Neville Stewart is recalled from his honeymoon with Triona to oversee the case which causes tension in his marriage. Callie has her own problems when the the roof of her flat needs repairing and she has to move into the vicarage with Brian and Janet.

The book makes some interesting observations on celebrity and its effect on the people who are lucky - or unlucky - enough to have it. Mark's family becomes involved with a contestant in 'Junior idol' a TV contest to find the next young pop star and this causes problems between him and Callie. The crimes, while they are important, take second place to the tangled realtionships of the police investigating them and their friends. Lilith Noone - the investigative journalist from previous books - also features and is starting to question the ethics of her own profession.

I felt the story did not quite have the depth - in spite of the title - of this author's previous work. I enjoyed it and it was a competently written crime story but it seemed to lack that certain something present in her previous work.

Kate Charles is brilliant at character continuity; Deep Water builds on ongoing situations, relationships and locality - all contributing to a gripping story. I use 'story' lightly, as several story lines are provided and all equally absorbing... you just want to know more. Great characters that stay in your thinking from page to page and indeed remain long after the final turn. Deep Waters could be read as a 'stand alone' but reading in sequence would make for a much richer experience. Very much looking forward to the next Callie installment !
