Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While the better-known stars of crime fiction routinely shift thousands of copies of their books, there are some writers who are held in far higher esteem by the real cognoscenti of the form. These are the men and women who deliver crime fiction written with far greater skill than the more trumpeted names; writers whose use of language rivals (and often surpasses) that of more ostensibly 'literary' writers. Such a talent is Thomas H. Cook, a North American writer who has built up a considerable reputation as well as gleaning several awards and nominations. Most recently, his highly accomplished Red Leaves was shortlisted for the Crime Writers Association Dagger Award. But in some ways, his latest, Master of the Delta, is his most striking novel yet.

Eddie Miller is known as the 'Coed Killer's son' since his father murdered and dismembered the body of a college girl when Eddie was a five years old. While Eddie chafes under the legacy of this soiled family name, Jack, scion of an aristocratic southern family, enjoys only respect when he returns from college to teach in Lakeland, Mississippi, his home town. While teaching the unlucky Eddie, Jack begins to see that there is more to this young man than most people have perceived: this is someone of real promise, struggling under a grim family legacy. Jack persuades Eddie to directly tackle the past and find out the truth about his father. But there are people opposed to this idea: the school principal, the local sheriff and even Jack's own uncommunicative father. Inevitably, some dark truths emerge, and lives are irrevocably changed.

If this novel were not marketed as a crime novel (with encomiums from such names as Harlan Coben) it would no doubt glean a sheaf of enthusiastic reviews for its penetration and insight. But those who feel that there is no reason why such ambition should not find a place within the context of the crime genre, a rare treat is in store with Master of the Delta. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Review

A good thriller doesn't necessarily require flying fists, bombs and bullets; a sure and measured build-up of tension does just as well, and few are better at the fine art of sure and measured than Thomas H. Cook - Guardian --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Master of the American crime novel, 6 Aug 2008

This review is from: Master of the Delta (Hardcover)
This is a welcome return to the elegiac structures of 'Breakheart Hill' and 'The Chatham School Affair'. A narrator looking back obliquely on mysterious and tragic past events; a slow accretion of information, the shifting of the kaleidoscope; an unsettling turning of the wheels as the book reaches its conclusion. And a masterful, unexpected twist at the very end.

We have a 'Southern Gothic' novel. A 1950's High School story. A meditation on Evil and the twisted consequences of jealousy.

Thomas H Cook is a writer to savour. He very rarely disappoints the reader - and here he is on vintage form.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharp character observations make this, 14 Mar 2009

This review is from: Master of the Delta (Hardcover)
Master of the Delta is the story of a lonely schoolteacher, the scion of a wealthy family, who becomes involved with a poor kid in his class, a boy who is bright, but isolated, in part because his father murdered a teenager when the boy was 6. The teacher decides to give an options course on evil, and encourages the boy to investigate his father's history as part of this.

It is an engrossing story, mainly because Cook is a master at delineating a character with just a few lines. He also has an amazing feel for the Mississipi delta; the book has a wonderful sense of place.

It is a satisfying book, with enough twists, turns and misdirections to keep the pages turning, but don't come here looking for a fast paced thriller. The vignettes and lessons on the evil men of history and fiction are sometimes illuminating, but also slow the book. They feel too erudite, as though the author is showing off his superior knowledge, although, of course, it is the narrator who is doing that (and quite in character).

It is a small niggle on my part - definitely worth a read.
