This book was quite a surprise to me as I thought that Mary Norton only wrote children's stories,which I liked.Well,I like these too,especially Beauty Bar,a touching tale about Mum and Dad (we never find out their real names).Mum gets a free makeover and decides to buy a hat.She goes home and Dad asks her out.It sounds simple,but in a few pages we deduce that Mum and Dad love each other very much,work hard but have little money,are very afraid of poverty(They don't see themselves as poor).Mum would love to go to the pictures but dosn't like to ask,Dad asks her anyway.His best suit is 8 years old,but it's still his best.You just know they are going to have a brilliant night out,and Mum,thinking of others as always,aks Dad if Flo,the nasty sister-in-law,can come too.They don't make them like Mum nowadays,but I really enjoyed reading her story.
These short stories were written for magazines before Mary Norton srarted on The Borrowers,and have a fascinating introduction by her daughter.They were not written so long ago,but it's like a different world.
