3.0 out of 5 stars An average supernatural thriller, 7 Nov 2007
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: You've Been Warned (Hardcover)
'You've Been Warned' is James Patterson's 5th book that he has released in 2007 and this time he has had a go at the supernatual thriller genre for a change, teaming up with Howard Roughan.

The story begins when hopeful photographer, Kristin Burns is a nanny for the Turnbull family and is also having an affair with the husband of the family. Kristin then begins getting shocking and terrifying nightmares everyday and weird things start happening all around her, including seeing people who have been dead for a while. This then sets Kristin on an investigation into what the dreams mean and find out the truth behind these strange sightings, by using her trusty camera.

This book has it's good and it's bad points. First the good - it's fast-paced and quite exciting and you'll find yourself flying through this book in no time at all. The characters are pretty good and the mystery will keep you hooked and thinking the whole way through. The main bad point is that the ending is pretty rubbish and very predictable and will leave you feeling a bit disappointed once you've finished it.

Overall it is a fairly decent read that is full of twists and excitement, as you'd normally expect from a Patterson novel. The downside is that if you're after a good Patterson novel, it's not as good as his Alex Cross or Women's Murder Club series. And if you're after a good supernatural thriller you're better off reading a Stephen King, Dean Koontz or a David Ambrose. If you're after a quick, easy and enjoyable read - give it a go. If you're after a deep, involving and memorable book - look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Going against the majority...a rather unexpected read, 13 Jan 2008
This review is from: You've Been Warned (Hardcover)
In general, I think Patterson's writing has been atrocious over the past year. He is whipping out cookie cutter stories, even my favourite Alex Cross bores me to tears.

Yet, I continue to read and this time was not disappointed. "You've Been Warned" is a significant departure from Patterson's usual fare with new characters. This book is fast paced and unusual. I read the whole thing in only a few hours as I just had to figure out the whole crazy thing. The ending was a bit of a disappointment- he got to cute there.

If you put the thoughts of Alex, Lyndsey, and the usual suspects out of your head and want a quick, entertaining read, give this book a try. Frankly, its the best thing he has written in years.

Caveat to Patterson- take a year off, relax, stop bombarding us with cut rate stories. Then come back, refreshed, and blow my mind!

It says it in the headline. The overall concept may have produced a fine thriller had any of the characters been either believable or had any depth. Read more
