Having previously read Tilly Bagshawes first novel,`showdown` had an awful lot to live up to. However with perseverence i finished the book in two days. The first couple of chapters i found heavy going (as i will explain shortly) owing to the subject matter, however once i had settled in to the book i thoroughly enjoyed every subsequent page.
The plot centres around a stud farm (of the horse variety) and a young girl named Milly who is very much in to horses and not so much in to men. Milly, a tomboy, soons starts to flower in the company of `Bobby Cameron`, an American cowboy/horse trainer. The plot tells of their trials and tribulations, revenge, sex,emotions and comeuppance and inevitably happiness in a story that reaches its final climax in the last chapter.
One final word, if horses do not appeal, persevere as this is one hell of a read!!

I bought this book to take with me on a long flight, and it filled the time nicely. The central character is pretty likeable and the writing is okay. There are a few howlers, i.e. hilarious metaphors like one about 'hope draining out of her like pus from an abscess (?!). And the listing of key characters at the start of the book wasn't strictly necessary. This isn't War and Peace, after all. That said, the book seemed to be well researched and it was engaging. Younger readers may prefer it, whereas more mature audiences may find it all a bit tough to swallow.

I loved this book, it was a highly entertaining read. I had to keep sneaking off to try to read another couple of pages so I could see what happened next. Can't wait for her next book!
