Product Description

It is 1913 and the world is on the brink of war. Yet on the estate of Cresswell Manor in Devon, the summer seems endless. Hannah, only daughter of the Cresswells, becomes involved with the suffragettes and dreams of falling in love; headstrong and spoiled Esmerelda deceives her husband for the strangest of reasons; Lettice longs for freedom from her brute of a husband; young Mortimer Cresswell appals his mother by falling in love with an estate worker's daughter, while his brother, Felix, causes heartbreak in his pursuit of pleasure. Caught up in their own lives, the Cresswells seem ignorant that war is looming, and that soon the world will alter beyond their wildest dreams - or fears...

5.0 out of 5 stars English historical saga at its best!, 29 Mar 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The heart's citadel is the second in a historical triology from 20th Century England. It mainly tells the story of two aristocratic families in Devon, their friends, servants and the general village life. It is as much an insight into life in England at that particular time, with emphasize on the living conditions of the different classes, as a vivid individual description of the main characters in the book.

It's fascinating and entertaining reading. Like Nicola Thorne, Anita Burgh has the ability to educate as well as entertain. I wanted the book never to end, and when it did, was urged to go on searching for more information about this time in English history.

I highly recommend both this and all Anita Burgh's other books. She has also written quite a lot in a contemperary setting, like "Breeders" and "The Lottery". However, If you are going to buy this book, I recommend that you also read the first in the trilogy, "The Broken Gate". The third one, "The Breached Wall", is due to be released in October/November 2007.

If you like Rosamunde Pilcher, Charlotte Bingham and Belva Plain, you will like Anita Burgh.
