1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 4 Jul 2008
Like so many other reviewers on this site I had really high hopes for this book. The fact it had been on the Richard & Judy book list suggested it would be the perfect summer holiday read but sadly reading it was like wading through treacle. The idea behind the book is intriguing but it is far too long and drawn out. There are too many subplots that bring nothing to the main story and too many poorly drawn characters for you to really care about them. The last few chapters move quite quickly but it is a long slog to get there. A book like this should be a great addition to your summer holiday - instead it felt like taking on a second job.

1.0 out of 5 stars awful beyond belief, 29 May 2008
By Zain Shah "Zs" (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
This is one of the worst books I have had the displeasure of reading, if not the worst! It's badly written, the characters all two-dimensional and it's about ten times longer than it should be. The only good thing about this book is that it made me want to learn more about the Cathars and Gnosticism in general, which I found quite interesting. Still, the book itself doesn't tell you much about them. It is obviously well researched and I do like some of the descriptions and settings. But still, it's a massive waste of money and time.
Alice is an idiot. The heart shaped faces made we want to throw up- what a cliché for terrible writing. The most flat character was the woman baddie- she could have been interesting but Kate Mosse just wrote her as a flat, boring cartoon character villain. Kate Mosse needs to work on her characterisation, join a critique group and learn to be more concise in her writing. She should try writing short stories for a while and attempt novels later when she's more capable. But of course,(and this really makes my blood boil) she probably isn't interested in writing a good novel now- she's been successful enough writing crap like this. This novel and it's unbelievable success are a crime against literature. Think of all the writer's out there that are probably living in poverty trying to create a work of art while Kate Mosse is probably getting fat from eating caviare in her mansion in the Languedoc region of France. (*big intake of breath*)
If you're thinking of buying this because it looks interesting, don't bother. She obviously only got good professional reviews due to politics, not merit. People should stop relying on Richard and Judy. There is good writing out there and it's not that hard to find: go browse in a library or a bookshop. Most likely the first thing you pick up at random will be a masterpiece compared with 'Labyrinth'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Richard & Judy are wrong about this one, 22 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Labyrinth (Hardcover)
Oh how I wanted to like this book. It sounded just like my sort of thing. Instead I struggled to the halfway point, then skipped to the last few chapters and skim-read to find out what happened in the end. The ending was just as boring as I feared it would be. The use of Occitan words immediately followed with the English translation drove me mad. Poorly constructed, clumsily written and not one character to care about. That's about a day of my life I won't get back.
