Review

'Wilson made her name as a writer of brilliant psychological thirllers. In this enjoyable series, she combines that skill with an eye for fascinating period detail.' (MORNING STAR )

'Blitz-scarred London is not just fearful of bombs but laso a serial killer. ****' (THE MIRROR )

'Wilson is very good indeed at reating a precise historical context ... she achieves it in the subtlest and most effective of ways, building up layers of unobtrusive detail that gradually become utterly convincing.' (SPECTATOR )

Product Description

Summer, 1944 After almost five years of conflict, London's exhausted inhabitants, pounded by the menace of Hitler's V1 bombs, are living in a world of dereliction. War-weary DI Ted Stratton is no exception, but he cannot help being drawn in by his latest case. Called on to investigate when a doctor is found dead in Fitzrovia's Middlesex Hospital, Stratton soon realizes that someone involved is not who they appear to be. Someone who has discarded their own identity and can move and kill freely. Meanwhile Jenny, Ted's wife, is working at the local Rest Centre, although her spirit of make-do is wearing thin. When a bombed-out woman appears at the centre, declaring that the man claiming to be her husband is an imposter, Jenny thinks that it must be due to shock. The reality, however, is much stranger and far more dangerous... Ultimately, for Stratton and Jenny perhaps there is only one thing they can trust: their fear. And for one of them, that fear may prove all too real. An Empty Death is a compelling exploration of identity, memory and trust and is perfect for fans of Foyle's War.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable follow-up to "Stratton's War"., 31 Jul 2009

This review is from: An Empty Death (Hardcover)
I thought "Stratton's War" one of the finest crime novels written, with the London Blitz as it's background. For some inextricable reason the second book is set in 1944, four years later, why such a long gap? I was looking forward to this second book in the series but was left a little flat after reading it. I think the setting of the Middlesex Hospital was not ideal, it was the central thread of the whole book and after a while became a distraction and a little boring. The book centers around a man of varying identities his final that of a doctor, even though he is not medically qualified he still manages to pass himself off, surrounded by other doctors and nurses, this was not totally believable. As for Stratton he seems to have been in limbo for the last 4 years, still only an Inspector he literally plods through his job, with little fanfare and very little job satisfaction. There is a fleeting return to his connnections with the Secret Service (which seem to be an utter waste of time in the context of the plot) which doesn't develop, at all. The book ends with the ending of the war and the arrest of two murderers. I was disappointed in the book after Stratton's first outing and can only wonder at where the series will go next. Stratton deserves better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay-ish, 17 Nov 2009
By D. P. Mankin (Ceredigion, Wales) - See all my reviews

Whereas 'Stratton's War' was more of a crime-thriller this follow up novel is very much a straightforward crime novel. Laura Wilson's ability to evoke the feel of the 1940s is excellent and in terms of the tone of the novel I was reminded of Andrew Taylor's Lyndmouth series. There is also a powerful emotional punch in the latter part of the novel. So why have I given it 3 stars and an 'Okay-ish' rating? Because of the plot. You are made aware of the identity of the central protaganist from the opening pages and so there is a lack of suspense which I had hoped (somewhat vainly as it turned out) the secondary plot would compensate for (this barely features as the story progresses and there's only one other character remotely fleshed out and therefore you know they must be the other murderer!). Added to this is the apparent ordinariness of Stratton's approach to work. As noted by the other reviewer he didn't seem to be the same detective that I had read about in 'Stratton's War'. Unless the down-trodden nature of his character in this novel was designed to symbolise the impact of five longer years of war. He even seemed to miss the glaringly obvious!
