5.0 out of 5 stars Taut and edgy thriller, 6 Jun 2007
This review is from: A Child's Game (Paperback)
This is the third Karen Sharpe, I have read, and the writer is getting better and better. Karen isn't your run of the mill sleuth. Mixed up in so many different ways and deadly with it, she goes deep cover in this novel and puts herself and her daughter in jeopardy.

There are some outstanding set-pieces here, and this writer is a real gem, and a cut above a lot of the crime writers out there.

I am looking forward to number 4 later this year.

1.0 out of 5 stars Feels repetitive, 22 Jun 2008
This review is from: A Child's Game (Paperback)
I didn't find anything in this book - whether style or story - especially different from what you normal expect from the genre.

Like a lot of long-running series in which the same detective returns over time (as opposed to, say, Bond books, which are timeless, in the sense that Bond, M, Moneypenny etc. are always about the same age and experience little or no character development, even if the setting has been updated to suit the readership) there is starting to be a nagging aspect of the soap opera about it - hence, perhaps, the sudden emphasis on her family.

I suppose all that is OK. Many people read genre novels precisely so they don't have to face challenges in terms of form, and a lot of people really enjoy soap operas... but this seemed especially run-of-the-mill. Is the pot boiling over?

1.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive and boring, hard to get into, 27 Aug 2008
This review is from: A Child's Game (Paperback)
This is the third book in the Karen Sharpe series. I've read the previous two, and can say that this book is a constant repetition of the other two. It is very hard to get into: the book has 392 pages and I was still struggling at page 150. The plot is so-so - we've read it all before, particularly in the previous books. Karen Sharpe is once again undercover, but this time she falls in love with her target (yes, again). She is so caught in her own little game that she doesn't see the danger coming, and when she does, she's been badly brutalized, etc. As a psychologist, I can only say that this character must have amnesia or schizophrenia, otherwise I couldn't explain her 'weird' behaviour. I mean, at times she forgets who she was before going undercover and who she is supposed to be. She refers to her undercover character as "she", "her memories", "her life". She is this completely detached person that in real life wouldn't work as an undercover agent but would be hospitalized and under medication.
Anyway, apart from using very strange personality traits in his books without any psychological knowledge whatsoever, the author also seems as if he didn't really have enough plot there and had to fill in the gaps with memories and stories from the previous books. With too many characters appearing at once without really explaining who they are and what they're supposed to be doing, even why they're being mentioned at all, this book is a frustrating read - one that I had to put down every ten pages as I felt like I was wasting my time reading it. This book may be written by the same author who wrote The Playroom, but it doesn't have its charm, fast-pacing plot or grabbing characters. After having read this, I can only suggest giving it a miss. I certainly won't be reading another Karen Sharpe book in the near future.
