'High-octane fun for all those who loved The Devil Wears Prada' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"A gripping murder-mystery. As razor-sharp as a model's shoulder blades and as gripping as Kate Moss's love life." (COSMOPOLITAN, July issue )

"With a debut novel liks this, Sam Baker is starting a sparkling career as an author. Really gritty storylines... I wouldn't be surprised if there was a movie or TV to follow up the book's success. A great read for lovers of fashion, but it's such a tightly-written thriller that people who like to settle down with a crime novel will also enjoy it." (COLLECTIVE, 31 Mar )

"A pacy thiller with a glam setting." (IN STYLE, Aug 06 ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fashion Victim, 30 May 2007
By A Reader (Oxford) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fashion Victim (Paperback)
I can understand why some people might not like this book. I had low expectations as soon as i picked this up, expecting a fluffy, light read. But it is actually a very dark, satirical story about the corruption of the fashion and journalist industries. Sam Baker must surely be writing from experience, so you cannot simply disregard the plot as an unrealistic account of how the fashion industry works. I personally found it interesting the way Baker has tried to negate the preconceptions of fashion as being glamarous and fluffy. If you like anything to do with models, journalism and magazines with a bit of murder and corruption thrown in, then you will like this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Blooming awful, 11 Mar 2007
This review is from: Fashion Victim (Paperback)
I'm staggered: this is possibly the worst book I've ever read. And I've read a lot.

Not only is the voice of the narrator, Annie, lifted straight out of exceptionally poor 90's paperback chick-lit (hate the term, but so appropriate here), but within about thirty seconds you really don't care what happens to her. And it gets worse. The conversations are outrageously contrived, Annie's actions totally unrealistic. The plot is thinner than tracing paper. By halfway through, you hope Annie does cop it. But sadly, you won't even have the energy to find out if she does or even how it ends...

I had such high hopes for this, but reading it made me feel like an absolute mug for picking it up in the first place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrible cover - great plot!, 22 Oct 2007
This review is from: Fashion Victim (Paperback)
People who buy this expecting fluff are going to be disappointed. Fashion Victim is a tough and dark crime novel that juggles the demands of journalism and fashion, and sees them through the eyes of Annie Anderson, ex-investigative reporter, ex-small town girl, self-elected outsider. Annie's over her drunken one-night stands, but she's thrown in her job at a newspaper, and still has to make peace with her family and with herself over a teenage love affair that nearly destroyed her.

Murdered designers, anorexic models, mafia money and shows where the money behind fashion is as important as the clothes. This is a look at the industry from the inside by someone who has done the shows and gone to the parties. Scary stuff, but in a good way!
