Review

"In this Sam Turner novel, Baker turns up the heat, producing an enjoyably pacy thriller that leaves its predecessors standing."

Product Description

Sam Turner returns to his home town, after completing a case in Nottingham, to find storm clouds gathering and the police waiting for him. He discovers that two of his ex-wives have been killed and that he is a suspect. Sam is released on condition that he does not leave York, but he sees a pattern in the two murders and guesses that the next victim will be another of his exes, Julie. Sam rushes to Oslo, where Julie now lives, but his efforts are in vain. She too is killed. Her murder marks out Sam as a prime suspect. He goes on the run, dodging not only the police, but the real killer, and finds himself embroiled in a terrifying mystery where he is both the fugitive and the detective, trying to anticipate the moves of the murderer and save his own skin.

Sorry, John Baker. I really like your blog, but this is a very tired book which I really couldn't finish. I will try another, though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sam Turner - a natural for TV..., 29 Sep 2005
By Roger Shallot (Merrie England) - See all my reviews
The sixth, and so far last instalment of Sam Turner's life as a private investigator based in the City of York is a satisfying progression from the previous novels in the series. In this one, Sam becomes a prime suspect as his ex-wives/partners are murdered one by one...
Once again it is John Baker's masterful construction of character that sets him apart from most others in the field. Sam, Geordie, Marie, Janet et al are now excellently fleshed out and it is very difficult not to care a great deal about them. The plotline is tight and exciting with a very nice dovetailed ending...perhaps the only criticism here is that when viewed cumulatively the series does seem to overdo the perils of living in York. As with Inspector Morse's lethal Oxford, it might be nice to read about Sam investigating something other than murder. It's only a minor quibble though, and this book, like its predecessors is a quality page-turner. I think it's important to read the series sequentially as one of its main strengths is the character development as it goes along, so I can recommend starting with the excellent 'Poet in the Gutter'. As it is, Sam Turner seems ideal for a TV adaptation...his flawed but sympathetic character and the use of York itself as a background would seem to be a great mix for the small screen.
