Product Description

Review
'Steve Mosby has invented a suitably dark and uneasy world for his excellent noir thriller. ... Mosby has a pleasingly consistent style that manages to encompass intense emotion, intellectual musings and vicious violence. Not an easy task. ' (Matthew Lewin THE GUARDIAN )

Product Description
The small team of policemen never even identified the dead girl, and for the officers involved her murder came to symbolise everything that was wrong with the city: a haphazard sprawl of commerce and indifference. Four months on, that group is in disarray. Sean has disappeared into the city's black heart and not returned, and Martin is separated from his job, his wife and his friends. But then a simple note from his ex-partner forces him to re-enter an investigation he'd rather forget. 'I found her', it says. His search leads him from one side of the city to the other, in a downward spiral of violence and pain, and drags him into the orbit of the things that are really wrong with the city: the eight brothers rumoured by legend to have control over everything. THE CUTTING CREW is an amazing piece of work. Part noir thriller, part surreal nightmare, it will grip readers of all genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars A daring, haunting, compelling read, 20 Jul 2006
This review is from: The Cutting Crew (Paperback)
The Cutting Crew is one of those books that takes you by surprise. You might think you're going to get a good thriller, you might think you're going to get a mystery, a good scare or even a mythical fable. In fact you get all these, with a good added dash of soul. It's the kind of novel that slowly gets its claws into you without you realising - then before you know it, you're caught, inspired and enthralled.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and original, 18 Sep 2007
By Helen Simpson (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
A relatively slow starter that somehow gets hold of you so you have to keep reading until the whole story has been unravelled.

Although it dips into different genres I would class it as a dark thriller with a futuristic feel, almost set in the here and now, but not quite. The strange names of the city's districts were more than a little surreal and the fact that armed police were the norm added to the futuristic vibes.

There was also a mythical air to the story which seemed accentuated by the almost gladiator style annual boxing event in the city. Along with the bad cops and mafia style underworld who always seemed to be one step ahead, it made for a very unusual yet strangely compelling novel.
