Product Description

Product Description

Max Freeman is seeking refuge from the familiar demons of his former life as a Philadelphia police officer in his secluded shack deep in the Everglades. But his self-imposed isolation is interrupted when he receives a desperate call from his best friend, attorney Billy Manchester. There has been a recent string of homicides - all elderly women, all from a poor neighbourhood, and all with sizeable and recently sold-off insurance policies. The police investigation is going nowhere, and Billy suspects something sinister may be at work. So, to help his friend, Max must reluctantly pry where he's not wanted, and act like the cop he's trying to forget he was. To discover an unseen killer, Max will confront not only the dangers of a forgotten Florida cityscape, but also the unexpected and dark corners of his own past.

2.0 out of 5 stars A visible..... mediocrity, 10 Nov 2009
By L. Bezzina (Malta) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Visible Darkness (Paperback)
A few years back i read Jonathon King 's debut novel "The Blue Edge Of Midnight" and was left utterly unimpressed. Forgot all about it as soon as the last page was finished and did not plan to read another book written by this guy. But against my better judgement, seeing also some positive reviews he received from other fellow writers, i decided to give him another try thinking that maybe seeing as it was his first novel, he would have gotten better. I was dead wrong, cause this book reviewed here which is the second of the Freeman series, is even worse than the first one.
A book which is barely 265 pages long (otherwise i wouldnt have finished it for sure) in which half of it is composed of boring, exasperating descriptions mostly of the Florida wilderness, and everything else involved including the furniture of a pub for crying out loud! So as one can imagine, doesnt leave much more pages for the plot to evolve, if there was a plot to start with that is. The killer s identity is revealed to us in the very first chapter, so there isnt even that element of surprise to look forward to and the final outcome highly predictable. The language used is awful, i mean i know the author did that on purpose seeing the bad streets the action was taking place in, but a bit more imagination was in order here (even the nicknames were horrible; "the brown man", "the junk man" etc.). Surprisingly enough this book was a nominee for the prestigious Shamus Awards. Goes to show how opinions can differ. Didnt give this book the one star it probably deserved cause there were some past flashbacks that had to do with Freeman 's past that mercifully werent that bad. But all in all extremely boring!
