Product Description

Product Description
Kate arrives at Barleybridge Veterinary Practice on her first day as the new receptionist. The setting is idyllic. Kate quickly gets to know the other staff and becomes engrossed in the work and drawn into their lives and those of the animals and their owners. But Kate has a big decision to make. Should she give up her faithful boyfriend Adam and train as a vet or should she be content to work in the practice as a receptionist? She confides in Scott because, although he is a bit of a womaniser, it is obvious that he is completely devoted to the animals and his work.Tender, funny and full of the warmth that has made the Turnham Malpas novels into bestsellers, this first Barleybridge novel is a sure winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars It kept my interest all the way through., 26 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Country Affair (Paperback)
Having just completed the 9 novels about life in Turnham Malpas, I expected something similar with "A Country Affair". However, this book is written in a refreshingly different way. I admire Kate for her determination and confidence and I am looking forward to reading the next in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars More of the Same?..........., 13 May 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Country Affair (Paperback)
Having read all of the Turnham Malpas Series, I tackled this book with some trepidation. Was it going to be the same? Or the same but different characters and settings? It was none of them things, it was a refreshing change. There are the main characters, and it all centres around a Vet's Practice. All the storylines, intertwine and bring in all the characters and their different relationships; Kate and Adam, Mungo and Joy,Scott and Kate and Bunty. Like any novel based round vets, they have them strange folk who keep animals and this book is not short of them, wait until you read about Phil, Blossom and their bull. There is a romantic element running throughout as well. The undercurrent relationship between Joy and Mungo, will no doubt keep running. The main relationship between Kate and Scott, is worthy of creating this into a television programme (be great as a Sunday Night Drama) I even confess to falling in love with Scott myself. All I can say is that I hope he comes back to Barleybridge. It is a great read, it introduces you to Shaw's novels well. If you like this read the Turnham Malpas series as well. You can't fail to be left wanting more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, 5 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Country Affair (Paperback)
Having found Ms. Shaw's Turnham Malpas books addictive, I thought I'd order A Country Affair. It was a pleasant surprise to find it different in many ways. Kate is an admirable protagonist with intelligence and ambition and just the right amount of naivete to make her experiences with the two men in her life believable. The author left enough loose ends to keep the reader interested and wanting more. The characters were interesting and often quirky and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
