Product Description

Product Description
Vain, womanising Tony and passionate, manipulative Andree met eight times in eleven months in the blue room at the Hotel des Voyageurs for afternoons of abandoned love. For Tony the conversation that last time was just the casual, almost banal, talk of lovers. But for Andree it was something else. And it led inevitably to an appalling double murder and a nightmare which Tony couldn't escape.

About the Author
Georges Simenon (1903-1989) was born in Liege, Belgium. At sixteen he began work as a journalist on the Gazette de Liege. 5.0 out of 5 stars baby the cool room, 5 May 2003
I'm an avid reader of crime fiction but for some reason or other had always managed to avoid Simenon!
I picked this book up at the library and had finished it by the next day. It's written with such power and focus, a lean fat free read which weighs in at around 140 pages and puts Georges Simenon into my top 5: This book was first published in 1961 but yet the style seems so modern.
The protagonist,Tony Falcone: a happily married man with child conducts an affair with a married woman from the same village. In Tony's head, the words "I love you" mean nothing more 'get yer kit off' but to the bunny boilers of the world it's an invitation to murder; the book glides comfortably between the courtroom, the bedroom and relentless climb towards the top of the cliff where the only option is to jump. Spectacular view though. I've read 3 of these Orion Crime Masterworks and so far they've all been what they claim.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unusual slant on an age old storyline, 18 May 2003
By Nicholas Bowry (Edinburgh United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Simenon comes up trumps yet again, with a different take on the consequences of a married man's affair.

It has his usual psychological twist in the story-telling, and made me wonder where he was taking the story. By the time the direction became clear, in a clever telling of the tale, I was wishing I could have told the main character! You'll have to read it to find out why.

An enjoyable short-ish story that, if you have read other Maigret's, will not leave you dissappointed, and if you are new to the stories will make you want to read more. It also makes you wonder just what does go on behind the louvred windows of an hotel in a hot French summer..

I only wish Penguin (or any other UK publisher for that matter) would start publishing them again, like Penguin did in the early 1980's, in three story volumes.

3.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying read, 10 May 2003
The Blue Room is an intense journey into the workings and psychology of those caught in a bizarre love triangle. The setting (small town France) is very important for the feel of the story and here is a well defined sense of place. This is an intelligent book. It delves deep into the psyche of all the central characters. You both sympathise with them and despise them. Overall, a compelling read.
