Amazon.co.uk Review
Steve Hamilton takes us on another Alex McKnight adventure in Blood is the Sky and hopefully this will be the book to break the former cop turned part-time PI into a major-league crime name on this side of the Atlantic. Alex finds himself aiding his friend Vinnie, whose brother has disappeared during a hunting trip in a remote part of the Canadian wilderness. Upon arriving at their last known location they are told that the party had been flown to a remote outpost and Alex, Vinnie and a young Cree Indian and his grandfather, fly to the outpost to find the missing party. Only now Alex and his friends become the hunted as it becomes clear that something more sinister is going on. Stranded alone at the outpost with no way of escape and no weapons, the group find themselves at the mercy of an unknown assailant who doesn't want them to make it back to civilisation alive.

Hamilton's McKnight mysteries are always worthy of a read as he has, over the course of several previous award-winning novels, created an impressive central character in McKnight, a character with real flaws who doesn't want to be dragged into trouble but keeps finding it knocking on his door. These are real boys'-own adventures, but also Hamilton has something truly worthwhile to say about the nature of both friends and family, and his sense of the cold, desolate wilderness, where nothing but your wits will save you, is chilling and evocative. --Jon Snow

Review
Michigan, October. Alex McKnight is rebuilding one of his cabins with friend Vinnie LeBlanc when LeBlanc is called to an emergency - his brother, Tom, has not returned from hunting and is four days overdue. Alex and Vinnie decide to retrace the hunt party's steps, travelling as far as the Ontario roads will allow. When they arrive at the outpost they are told that the hunters have already left to return to Michigan. But something's wrong. Vinnie and Alex - aided by a Cree Indian and his grandfather - fly to the outpost, only to find a terrible secret. Alex and Vinnie are miles from home with no food or equipment - and someone doesn't want them to get home alive. Superb visualisation of Canadian countryside with original characterisations make this one to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling On More Than One Level, 3 Jan 2004
By Untouchable (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
After his recent adventures, chronicled in the previous book North Of Nowhere, Alex McKnight is attempting to pick up the pieces of his life by rebuilding his cabin with the help of Vinnie Le Blanc, an Ojibwa indian who is his friend and neighbour. Breaking the reverie that comes with the rebuilding process is news that Vinnie's brother Tom is way overdue from a hunting expedition in Canada where he was to act as a guide. The two men decide to head north in a bid to track Tom's movements and try to find him. From here the story turns into a fight for survival in the wilds of North Canada.

As Alex and Vinnie uncover the story of what happened up at the hunting lodge, more questions come up than are answered. They realise too late that their lives have become endangered but can't work out why. Of course, they aren't given terribly long to work on the why part of the question because they are kept busy working overtime trying to save their own skins.

It's a tantalising thriller that had me guessing right up towards the very end. Thrown in with this are the wonderful descriptions of the untamed wilderness of Ontario that was brilliantly captured by Hamilton. I found the story compelling reading on more than just one level making it doubly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood is the Sky is excellent., 7 Jul 2003
By D. Norman "chippermoon@aol.com" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Alex McKnight agrees to help out his friend, Vinnie in trying to establish what has happened to Vinnie's brother Tom. Their subsequent investigations, in which the plot gradually takes shape, lead both Vinnie and Alex into the Canadian backwoods. It is here, in this remote region, they find themselves abandoned. They have no way of escape, are without adequate food and clothing and have become the prey of ruthless hunters, determined that they do not reveal the secret of what they have discovered.

This is a very different PI book. Certainly, a very different Alex McKnight novel. Although the whole book is still carefully plotted with the story lines as concise as ever.

But what gives the book it's real definition is the bond of friendship that grows between Vinnie and Alex. The short one liners's of dialogue create the sense of vulnerability that both are facing in this remote place. The dangers they are being forced to encounter add to their individual strengths, and these they combine to devastating effect.

As this isn't enough, Steve Hamilton even manages to create a romantic link between Alex, and the attractive Natalie Reynaud of the Ontario Police.

Blood is the Sky, is such a compelling read, it is hard to put the book down. Yet, at the same time, I did not want to reach the end. More like this, please, Mr Hamilton!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Novel from a Top Series, 16 Oct 2006
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Blood is the Sky (Paperback)
McKnight is a haunted man. He was once a Detroit cop, but he and his partner were shot, he survived and his partner did not. Unable to continue working as an officer he retreated to a collection of cabins that is father had built before he died. Now McKnight lives his life out in peace - that is until he is reluctantly drawn into another adventure.

By 'Blood is the Sky' Hamilton has firmly established the McKnight series of novels and its characters. Rather than let the series slip into mediocrity we are instead treated to the best so far. McKnight is angry as he is forced to rebuild one of his cabins that was burned down. However, this job helps him to repair the friendship with his neighbour Vinnie. With their strong relationship healed McKnight soon finds himself crossing the Canadian border with Vinnie to hunt for his lost brother tackling murder and the elements as one.

This book is a real thriller. Hamilton introduces us to the story and sets off, not stopping its break neck speed to the very end. The characters are truly excellent with the relationship between McKnight and Vinnie really holding the story together. Because you care so much about them, the dangers they face are far more thrilling.

The book itself is relatively short and can be read easily but when it is as good as this you can't wait for the next instalment. For fans of gritty PI crime novels this is a must. For the top of the genre read Connelly, Crais, Coben and now Hamilton.

Sammy recommendation.
