Review
In this sequel to Hamilton's debut novel, The Bone Pedlar, ex-crusader and relic hunter Sir Richard Straccan is on a quest for one of the most precious and legendary relics of all - the Pendragon Banner, a symbol of King Arthur's righteous claim to the throne, sewn by the hands of Queen Guienever and lined with a cloth stained with the blood of Christ. The banner has been missing for years and is presumed lost for all time. But if Straccan is to keep his daughter Gilla safe from the clutches of the infamous King John he must do the impossible and find it swiftly. With his faithful servant Bane, Straccan sets off in search. Never able to pass by someone in need, he becomes embroiled in the mysterious case of an amnesiac accused of robbery before his search for the relic has had any success, but his chivalrous actions are repaid in kind, and usually at just the right moment. Back on his search, Straccan faces a mad hermit, the wrath of King John, a town of thieves and a valley of lepers, all the while unaware that the home he is striving so hard to protect is rapidly changing for the worse. The woman he loves, accused of witchcraft, is forced to flee in the utmost secrecy to save her life and the book ends with her situation still unknown. It is with bated breath that we long for the third in this fascinating historical series. (Kirkus UK)
