Product Description

Product Description

'Perth was a dog larger than life. She bought us adventure, drama and joy. She changed us forever.' From the instant they spotted the forlorn puppy in the kennel, Cindy and Peter Martin knew she was the one for them. Refusing to remain a mere pet, Perth becomes an adored member of the household - fiercely loyal, impossibly intelligent and totally trusting. The Martins swear to always let Perth run free, and she becomes an indefatigable explorer with an infallible compass. From the woods and lakes of upstate New York and her incredible survival in the wilderness of Vermont to her later adventures in the English countryside, Perth rewards the Martins with unshakable trust and unstinting love. This is an entertaining, beautifully written homage to a very special canine heroine that will bring tears to the eyes of dog lovers everywhere.

About the Author

Peter Martin was born in Argentina of English parents and educated there and in America. He has taught English literature in both England and America and written extensively on 18th-century British and American literature and culture. He divides his time between southern Spain and West Sussex.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice dog shame about the author, 23 Jun 2005
By Paul Chipperfield (Frimley Green, England) - See all my reviews

I agree with the sentiment expressed in the other reviews about the dog, but came away disliking the owners immensely. What responsible dog owner allows their dog to bite people without taking some kind of action in the way the author ducks his responsibility. Also, leaving the dog with unsuspecting people whilst he disappears off. Love the dog, don't buy the book, because I think the author does not deserve the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Would you treat your dog like these people?, 7 Mar 2006
By josie (england) - See all my reviews
I completely agree with the reviewer who said that they read this book and although loved the dog, came away with feelings of strong dislike for the author and his wife. Whilst I dont doubt the fact that they love their dog in a sadly typically human way, I felt throughout the book that they were in fact irresponsible dog owners. I have never met anyone in my life who would leave a much loved dog for a long period of time, let alone with virtual strangers whilst they swan off to another country to do 'important career stuff'. This book reinforces the truth that dogs are endlessly loyal and beautiful creatures, and human beings often do not deserve such love.

5.0 out of 5 stars She's a one in a million dog!!, 4 Oct 2001
I own a Beagle myself so was drawn to this delightful book straight away. Anybody who owns any dog can associate all the going on's in this book with tear's and laughter. Perth is a one in a million Beagle who certainly has her fair share of up's and downs like any human. It was one of those books you just can't put down once you turn that first page. Peter Martin certainly writes his book with a great deal of passion which makes it even easier to relate too. I shall certainly take a look at more of his titles.
