I've read all the Crais novels and loved every single one, this being no exception. Before I read it I didn't expect to find the book as enjoyable as I actually did after realising that it wasn't an Elvis Cole novel. I found the characters intriguing right from the start though I must say they were not as striking as Elvis and Joe Pike. At times the story became predictable but a slight twist generally followed those parts. The relationship between Carol Starkey and 'Mr Red', as she knows him, is one of the most interesting and well thought out parts of the book. Nearing the end of the book, I moved on to the edge of my seat and was kept there for the remainder of the book. Crais should be proud of all his books and I hope he will continue to churn out his novels (even when they don't feature Elvis Cole)!

Three years ago Carol Starkey, a top-notch bomb squad technician came back from the dead. Her partner and lover
died. Since then she has been burying her survivor's guilt with alcohol and Tagamet. While assigned to LAPD's Criminal
Conspiracy section, Carols lands a case in which a seemingly easy bomb to diffuse kills another technician. She soon finds
herself investigating a series of bombings in which the bombs were deliberately designed to kill the technicians.

Robert Crais has written a fast pace novel with twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages until you are done. He
has successfully created a complex multi-dimensional wounded character in Carol Starkey while at the same time immersing
you in the authentic world of bomb making and the dangerous world of the bomb technicians.

This is the first book I have read by Robert Crais and I now have a new author to add to my To Be Found (TBF) and To
Be Read (TBR) piles. I highly recommend this book. Review by: Lillian Porter

The story centres around Carol Starkey, a bomb squad detective who is still pulling herself and her life back together after surviving a bomb black three years earlier.

Starkey and colleagues from the Criminal Conspiracy Section and her old team at the bomb squad are in a race against time to find the identity and whereabouts of a mysterious serial bomber known only as 'Mr Red'.

It's a good plot and great mystery, but Carol Starkey's character is a little too one dimensional to really work. She and the other characters are interesting, but this isn't as good at Crais's other work. That said, the pace of the book is fast enough to get past any limitations in the characterisation.
