Product Description

Freelance journalist Cara Kerr is in the midst of the great Australian rite of passage known as A-Few-Years-in-London when she accepts an assignment to ghost-write the autobiography of a prominent mystic guru Gaelle Carrington-Keane. Gaelle's revelations change not only Cara's life but those of her Battersea flatmates as well - slick TV producer Moni and ethereal graphic designer Lucy. Soon, all three girls discover that the journey to inner peace requires more than just meditation, mantras and monster spliffs. And the last thing Cara expects to find along the way is love ...

5.0 out of 5 stars One for the cynics, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
I picked this up in Sydney recently, attracted by the gorgeous cover and the bizarre title! I also wanted to see what Australian chick-fic was like compared to all the stuff we get here at home. Cara Kerr is a fun-loving, hard-drinking, spliff-smoking Australian journalist who couldn't care less about the alignment of her chakras or the colour of her aura. Until she gets involved with former socialite turned new age guru, Gaelle Carrington Keane. Gaelle sees a piece Cara has written for a London paper about new ageism and asks her to ghostwrite her biography. Or at least, that's what she tells Cara ... What follows is an action-packed journey through the world of alternative beliefs, as Cara tries to find out what Gaelle really wants from her.

What I particularly liked about this book was the fact that it was written through the eyes of a cynic, making some of the practices and ideas propounded in it so much more palatable to a hardened New Age cynic like myself - I even thought about meditating after I read it! And it's not just about crystals and transcendental meditation - this is a really funny, quirky, fast-moving and well-written story about Australians living in London, about falling in love and about young women coming to terms with who they are. And although in style it's a chick-fic book, in content it's nothing like. Very refreshing and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars just fantastic, 21 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I'd seen a few reviews of this book and finally read it when a friend gave it to me for my birthday. It's like action and adventure and romance all in one. Seriously funny, as well, and some of the lines are so ... deeeep. I even took down a few quotes. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives you the warm fuzzies, 18 Jul 2001
By Sarah (England and Italy) - See all my reviews
This is a fun, fast read with an ending that gives you the warm fuzzies (Oz slang for contentment), and a beginning and middle that show you London through the eyes of Australians, and New Age mumbo jumbo through the eyes of a cynic.

I've got to say that a lot of this went straight over my head, although the stuff I understood I found really fascinating. Read more
