5.0 out of 5 stars Master storytelling, 27 Mar 2001
I picked up this book cheaply second-hand and boy was I glad I did! Anita Burgh is a master story-teller. She is sometimes looked down on as a "popular" writer, I can't imagine why. Her stories (I have read most of them since this book, she doesn't write quick enough for me) are well-plotted, beautifully written and totally captivating.

She also taught me some good English usage in this book : there is a passage where I girl asks if she CAN use the telephone. The response is "Yes I know you CAN use the telephone, and you MAY". Wow, I never realised before what an important distinction there is between can and may. Amazing what you learn!

I would recommend this book to anyone, not just animal-lovers. Everyone I have lent it to has loved it, and gone on to read more of Anita Burgh.

This book does have a lot about dogs in it, but the plot, characters and wit stand in their own right. Her research is obviously extensive, but doesn't "show" too much - she isn't trying to teach her readers. An excellent book from an excellent writer.
