Product Description

Product Description

An irresistible little book of quotations from many writers with robust views on a subject close to all our hearts, and illustrated by a young artist with a delightfully unpredictable viewpoint all her own. From Jane Austen to Stevie Smith, from Daisy Ashford to Oscar Wilde, from Shakespeare to Vita Sackville-West, the brief quotations offer an affectionate and sometimes caustic view of gardens and gardening, houses and housekeeping, and the beauties and perils of the countryside beyond the garden wall. The miniature figures that people the pages, admiring (and sometimes deploring) nature and their surroundings, are characterful and humorous. Laura Stoddart's illustrations are as pretty as they are witty, and the flowers and trees, the greenhouses, gardens and vistas and even the odd pieces of furniture that are scattered through the text make this the most enchanting gift book of the year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and attractive little book., 1 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Purchasing this volume as a present I was reluctant to give it away as it contains a wealth of entertaining, short quotes on the themes of home and garden. A real "dip in" book which can be enjoyed however brief your moment of leisure; although you may be reluctant to put it down as you enjoy the lovely, light illustrations. As a bonus, it could be an excellent source book for quotations for calligraphy enthhusiasts.

(REAL NAME)

It's a lovely little book, very tasefully finished.
I particlarly like it for two little ditties on Food, viz:

a) one beginning " He may live without books -----"
and
b) one beginning " If the soup ---------"

I have used these many occasions.
