4.0 out of 5 stars Subtle Thrills, 10 Feb 2001

This review is from: Nocturne (Paperback)
An unusual, tightly plotted thriller that is both disquieting and disarming. The characters are likeable and the situations they find themselves in are not too outrageous. The ending is difficult to guess, although some of the plotting techniques along the way are easier to spot, but I was left with the suspiscion that this was intended by the author anyway - his heroine, after all, finds herself in a predicament precisely because she finds it difficult to suss a persons true motives. I found this an enjoyable and interesting read. It's the first book I've read by Graham Hurley, but it won't be the last.

4.0 out of 5 stars An immensely readable book with an engaging heroine., 18 Dec 2000

I found this book to have that unputdownable quality.

Julie Emerson moves to London and starts work for a TV company "Doubleact" and buys her own home which is a two-bedroom conversation in a cul-de-sac in a quiet street. Upstairs lives a flute-playing mystery man whom Julie tries to befriend.

Her relationship with this strange neighbour and with her boss at "Doubleact" form the basis of a very intriguing story with an unexpected twist at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Places of the Mind, 15 Aug 2006
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

Obsession can come in more than one guise. Perhaps a stalker or a boyfriend that will do too much for you? 'Nocturne' explores the obsession of two men over one woman who moves to London to pursue a job in the Media. Not long after moving she begins an affair with her boss but also starts to have misgivings about the man in the flat above. Who is the most obsessed and who is the most dangerous?

This is a very pleasantly paced thriller that lets you get to know the characters well before diving into any danger. Usually this method of writing does not appeal to me but Hurley has created characters that are interesting to read about and easy to be sympathetic towards.

The only criticism I would have is the final section that feels out of place and not that well described. Apart from this, 'Nocturne' is an excellent and gentle thriller that can be read to wile away a sunny afternoon with a glass of wine. I look forward to reading other novels by the author.
