Product Description

Product Description

Doris Day is almost always portrayed as the sunny, squeaky-clean girl next door. This wholesome image kept her at the top for twenty-four years and thirty-nine films. But behind the effervescent, ever-cheerful image that Doris Day portrayed through dozens of classic Hollywood movies was an extraordinary story of private pain. Her dazzling smile hid a tormented personal life that included four marriages, and a terrifying accident that nearly ended her life. And yet for generations of movie-goers Doris Day remained the embodiment of innocent beauty and apple-pie homeliness, and even today she exerts a powerful fascination for millions of fans around the world.

About the Author

Eric Braun MA (Cantab.) is a theatre and film critic and show-business writer. After service in the Royal Artillery he began his writing career with Odeon cinemas before entering the film industry. He has written biographies of Doris Day and Deborah Kerr and three books with Beryl Reid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Doris Day opinions!, 3 Sep 2001
Many of the Doris biography's i've read have been filled with repetitive fluff with mistakes in dates, names, and events. This book has a counter view point to all the apple pie goodness and is so much more interesting than latest biography by michael freedman. If you're looking for a new opinion and outlook on an awsome star, this would be that book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for insomniacs, 22 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Although the subject matter, Doris Day, was very interesting, the book was so badly written that I only managed to get half way through before I relegated it to the bin. If you are interested in the plot of every film she did, or the history of anyone who acted in them or made a similar film, or suffer from insomnia, this is the book for you. If you are really interested in Doris Day, buy another book

1.0 out of 5 stars Too much about too little, 22 April 2003
By A Customer
If you want to know the plot of every film Doris has been in, who co-starred with her, and what the writer thinks about those co-stars and the other movies those co-stars have been in, then this is the book for you.

But for me, I am more interested in who she is, what makes her tick, and this book doesn't give you that. All the information seems to be second hand if not third hand.

This one was not for me.
