Product Description

Product Description

John Cleese is adored around the world by an extraordinary spread of generations. From early MONTY PYTHON to FAWLTY TOWERS (widely acknowledged to be one of the best comedy series of all time), and on to highly successful films such as CLOCKWISE, A FISH CALLED WANDA and FIERCE CREATURES, John Cleese is the quintessential English eccentric. Many of his fans see him as the finest comedy writer Britain has ever produced. Others are fascinated by his ventures into psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, even his dalliance with politics. CLEESE ENCOUNTERS was the first biography of our most enigmatic star - the awkwardly tall boy from Weston-Super-Mare who nearly became a solicitor, until he discovered Cambridge and the Footlights. More than this, it is a funny, sympathetic and wide-ranging story about one of the greatest escapes in history.

Two scenes, more than sixty years apart, episodes so preposterously different that only a man as uniquely in tune with the absurd as John Cleese could have contrived, even in a comedy, to connect them. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good bio, marred only by Cleese's non-cooperation, 6 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Margolis writes a straight, sympathetic bio, particularly good on his early years, but a little skimpy on the later years and on his personal life, and there is little depth in revealing what drives the man beyond what Cleese himself has already published. This is probably due to Cleese's non-cooperation with the author; Cleese told his acquaintances to "be discreet" when he found out about Margolis's plans for a bio. Nevertheless Margolis works well within these limitations. There is little comedy to be found within these pages, but the part on the American adaptation of Fawlty Towers is hilarious, and confirms all your worst prejudices about the American "entertainment" industry.

4.0 out of 5 stars duck's off, 5 Feb 2001
By A Customer
An interesting book for all Cleese (not Cheese) fans. Splendid info on Cleese's early life and upbringings, and an insight into the mind of the genius that is Cleese, including the tyrade he formed in a speech for a departing teacher at the age of 18, concluded by wishing the fellow the best of luck in the future. The nature of Cleese is also explored to some extent, from the jester who stole his writing partner's pipe for revenge, only to be kicked in the groin, to the writer who refused to allow Fawlty Towers to be sold to networks due to their editing techniques, thereby making possible millions, and instead earning $2.00 an episode on PBS. A whole chapter on Cleese's commercialism and a lack of Python info are the drawbacks of the book, but it is still a great and interesting portrait of the artist

(Just don't mention the war........)
