Beginning in the scented rooms of the Forbidden City where the Chinese Emper- or's First Concubine has a child, not the Emperor's but that of her secret lover, moving swiftly to the bloody execution of twenty criminals witnessed by ahorrified English doctor newly arrived in the Orient and then exploding out ontothe huge canvas of a civil war that tore apart China, "BARBARIANS" is fast mov- ing and very dramatic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Asian History: Barbarians, 2 Nov 2003
This review is from: Barbarians (Paperback)
This book will fascinate anyone interested in living history, that is history brought alive through the novel.
Initially a difficult book to get into however after the initial few chapters the book goes ahead at a pace that is lightening. Carter's style attacks the emotions, repulsion at the brutality meeted out by the Chinese Manderins to poor and criminals, and the discust at the arogance of the Westeners who's main thought is gain, and who will do anything, including enciting civil and religeous war to get their foodhold in the newly opening China. The horror of westernisation by christianisation another example of the European arogance.A book that you won't put down: vividly written and culturally poingnant.
