2.0 out of 5 stars Technical dumps linked by dull plot, 25 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Permissible Limits (Paperback)
One can only assume that this was a spin-off from Graham Hurley's research for his factual (and vastly more interesting) "Airshow". It suffers from 'research dumps': Hurley has clearly learned a lot about airplanes and how to fly them and, via the device of a dull central character who wants to keep and learn to fly her late husband's P-51D Mustang fighter, just has to inflict all this information on the reader. Couple this with the tendency for Hurley's non-crime books to be formulaic - small person is dragged into Big Conspiracy based on whatever annual theme he's chosen for the book (landmines, politics, vintage airplanes, whatever) and it's really not a very interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars permissible limits, 25 Mar 2008

This review is from: Permissible Limits (Paperback)
I disagree completely with the above review. Although I wasn't wildly interested in flying a plane before reading the book I found myself thinking that maybe it wouldn't be so bad to learn... The technical info such as it is would probably interest anyone with an enquiring mind, and in any case is an integral part of the plot. Graham Hurley has a compelling style, he writes so well that it's easy to take for granted, doesn't rely on gratuitous sex or violence to spice things up, and the whole thing hums along like a well tuned motor, with no deadly longeurs. This book ended too soon for me, or I read it too fast...
I'd rate it five stars, and wish I'd discovered it a long time ago.
