Product Description

Product Description

IMAGINE three or four of the biggest acts in world music appearing on the same stage at a humble little venue a five minute stroll from where you live. Back in the 1960s, pop crazed teenagers didn t have to imagine. They were blessed that long before ipods and downloads (and even the pop video) were invented pop stars brought their music to the masses by turning up in their towns to play at the local cinema or concert hall. Legends On Tour recreates those magical pop package tours when the stars often travelled together on a bus for a month or more, trekking the towns and cities of the UK. There are rare and unpublished pictures of icons such as Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Small Faces, Roy Orbison and many more and the story is brought to life by interviews with 21 pop stars from those days. Kenney Jones of The Small Faces describes these gigs as mini Live Aids, the forerunner of the super stadium shows that were to follow. The book features seven tours between 1965 and 1967 and there is a special section documenting the pop package tours of The Beatles

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, 19 Feb 2008
By Mr. Sd Phillips "stephen26" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The author must have researched this book over many years and it is a joy to read. The book is full of photographs of the artists that performed on these tours; Hendrix,Cat Stevens,Walker Brothers and Engelbert Humperdink to name four.He traces and interviews some of the people and many of the stars who were present all those years ago.If you ever wondered about bands {groups] touring in the 1960's, then I suggest this book very strongly. I was at one of these shows in Aldershot, in 1967, and the author brought my memories back to life. An excellent informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Read, 15 Sep 2007
This was a real gem of a read.
The author clearly did his homework as his work unveils how the top starts toured in less than glamorous locations.
The excellent writing is backed by pictures that I haven't seen before.
I particularly liked this book as I have read many others on the various artists but found that this one adds a further dimension to how they reached their legendary status.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOSTALGIA UNLIMITED!, 30 May 2009
I used to sing with many pop groups through the Sixties around my hometown of Southampton as well as going to see many Pop Package shows featuring the top stars of the time.

Seeing the Beatles (twice) during 1963 inspired me to follow the same path and this amazing book brings it all back. The author has managed to convey the amazing atmosphere with first hand interviews of some of the big names that appeared on these travelling shows. Mixed with rare archive photographs and personal memories from a wide variety of fans, theatre staff this book took me way back to a Golden Era.

I also maintain my own website on the Southampton Sixties music scene and 'Legends On Tour' has provided me with even more information that can be used. In addition, I am also writing my own (first) book so will definitely be adding this terrific book to the Bibliography section as well as telling my musician pals all about it.
