Product Description
"Essex Airmen 1910-1918" is a tribute to the airmen of this county leading up to and throughout the First World War. Illustrated with contemporary archive photographs, John Barfoot creates a moving record of these men, including the more colourful characters such as 'Peter the Painter' and 'Peter the Monk', as well as the Essex men who joined up with the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Naval Air Service, including one man who pioneered deck landing on aircraft carriers and another who shot down a Zeppelin. This detailed volume also considers airmen from overseas and around the UK who were stationed at Essex aerodromes in the First World War, and remembers the 162 airmen buried in the county and the AA gunners, searchlight and barrage balloon crews.
