5.0 out of 5 stars This is a really good book!, 16 July 2004

When I heard about this book, I thought it sounded like my sort of book, and it didn't disappoint me.

I was enthralled: this tale of courage in the First World War is a true story, and it is so exciting and interesting it had me turning the pages at an alarming rate.

Derek Clayton may be an author to look out for in the future, because his debut book is brilliant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disagree with hte other reviews, 2 Jan 2006

Given the abundance of books written on the Great War, most of which seem to be written about the Somme or Passchendaele, it was nice to see someone attempt a battalion history, this book being on the 9th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. However, when compared to other recent battalion stories, Clayton's book misses the target by a long way. When reading the book I felt I was back in the bad old days of military history before Middlebrook. It certainly has the feel of 'a book written by an officer for the officers about the officers' as I put it.
With a special interest in Loos I read this specific chapter with hopeful anticipation on learning something new about the actions of a specific battalion there. I was however to have my hopes dashed as all Clayton has seemed to do is to re-hash information from the Official History. The overall verdict on this chapter must be somewhat unsatisfactory. There was only one personal account from one of the officers. Indeed two photos of other ranks have been put in the chapter, with no further information as to which company they were with or how they died, perhaps just to try and prove that the other ranks were there too.
The above comments regretfully also apply to the chapter on the Somme in 1916, again the selection of photographs shows little imagination and the maps inadequate and confusing- places mentioned in the text are not to be found on the maps.
It is regretted that the author relies for around 80% of his personal accounts from just two people-both officers. Perhaps the book should have been written on the lines of two officers letters and experiences on the western front. Therefore the book lacks a real 'front-line' feel, the text is marred by several unfortunate errors including Clayton's introduction of two new ranks to me-Adjutant Corporal and Lieutenant Corporal. A final observation is the recommended price of £17.99 which in my view doesn't really justify value for money in a paperback- I feel for this sort of money at just over 200 pages it should be a hardback. Overall the verdict must therefore be somewhat unsatisfactory unless you like reading letters home from officers in a battalion history.
