3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting in parts - but not enough to the point, 24 Nov 2006
By B. K. Peddie (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews

As someone very interested in Roman history in general, and the Romans in Britain in particular, I looked forward very much to reading this book. I was however disappointed to find that much of it does not in fact deal with its purported subject. The first quarter of the book gives a potted history of Rome and of prehistoric Scotland, and at the end we get material on post-Roman Scotland such as St Columba, but if I wanted to read about those subjects I would look to more detailed treatments elsewhere. Similarly, I would have liked to know more about Severus's campaigns but much of the narrative here deals with how he came to the throne and other events away from Britain, let alone Scotland. Their inclusion here detracts from the main subject and takes up too much of what is anyway quite a short book - we don't get to the first Roman incursion into Scotland until the second third of the book. I realise that shortage of hard evidence is a problem with this subject, but I would have preferred more discussion of what evidence does exist rather than reading about chambered cairns c. 3000 BC or the death of the Gracchi.

It would also benefit from better maps. For instance, I had not previously heard of the "Gask frontier" despite having (so it seems) driven across it frequently and so found that very interesting, but it is only shown as a name on a small-scale map whereas a more detailed topographical treatment would have been nice.

The writing is also a bit odd in places - e.g. "as the Dark Ages dawned in Britain"!

When it sticks to the point it does have interesting material, with mention of recent archaelogical discoveries - but I was left feeling disappointed that it strayed from the point so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland's invasions revealed, 28 Jan 2005

TLF will appeal to those curious about the history of Scotland as well as those who want to know more about the expansion and subsequent evolution of the Roman Empire. Antony Kamm is a serious scholar with many historical books to his credit. He writes seriously but with a fine humour. He is precise and detailed, and for those of us who aren't familiar with the terrain provides useful maps in every chapter.

We thus get to follow the development of the different cultures involved, the movements of the invading armies, the penetration of Roman mores and the reaction of the indigenous populations. We see how the affairs in other parts of the Empire affect the occupation of Britain, and have an almost visual understanding of the ebbing of the Roman power along a changeable border which we usually equate with Hadrian's Wall.

Kamm takes us along with the flow of history until the last years of the Roman Empire and the emerging conscience of Scotland as a nation.

An additional bonus is the section on Places to visit, a selection of museums, archaeological sites and monuments that will make a great guide for historically minded visitors to Scotland.
