Book Description

A collection of over 200 black-and-white images, together with informative captions, which give an insight into the history and development of Wavertree during the past two centuries. Wavertree is a former Lancashire village which since 1895 has formed part of the city of Liverpool.

The photographs cover a wide range of subjects, including well-know local landmarks such as the Picton Clock Tower, the Monks’ Well, the Lock-up, the Liverpool Blue Coat School and several churches, as well as lost-but-not-forgotten features including Wavertree Mill, the Lake, the Cottage Homes and Sandown Hall. There are street scenes of the old village, Olive Mount, the Penny Lane area, Smithdown Road and the pioneering Liverpool Garden Suburb, and pictures of local sports teams, schoolchildren, 1930s Rose Queen festivals and other community celebrations.

Most of the images are derived from Edwardian picture postcards, but there are some earlier scenes - along with several from the 1970s which, for various reasons, are now ‘historic’.
