5.0 out of 5 stars TimeTeamly Good!!, 26 May 2006
By R. P. MACLEAN (Inverness, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What a good book! In the absence of any unofficial reviews of this book I was quite prepared to read through a 'technical' account of South Uist history and archaeology. As a 'Time Team' archaeologist (ie I love watching it on the telly and would love to get 'hands-on' but too busy with work) this was right up my street/machair! It is very easy to read and I would heartily recommend it to the interested amateur and enthusiast alike. One or two things I would have queried were things like 'sunwise wrapping of wire round a fence post' - I don't think this could be attributed to ancient ritual! And suggestion that it may be a two day hike to visit ruins on the east coast of the island - dear God, it's not the size of Tasmania! There is still a lot to be done on Uist and I would like to think there is a lot still to find on the hilly and heathery east coast - it would seem so much more practical to have some sort of (even) temporary accommodation there, rather than the exposed (to the elements and attack) west side. But this was one of the attractions of the book - I found myself wanting more information/wanting to ask more questions. Roll on Volume 2 - I'd buy it straight away. I really enjoyed this book. (I visit Uist fairly regularly for the fishing and intend keeping my eyes/mind more open than usual in the future!!). (The Time Team reference I make is for the reader - the authors and colleagues are thoroughly professional and have been there for the long-haul. The Borrodale is frequented by the fishermen as well!!).
