4.0 out of 5 stars British Built Aircraft - Greater London, 24 Dec 2002
By Mr. D. F. Lang "David" (LONDON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This interesting book is the first in a series planned by Ron Smith resulting from his winning entry in the 1994 Dawn to Dusk Competition when he flew round the United Kingdom to locate the places where aircraft had once been built. Many British aircraft manufacturers have unfortunately ceased to exist and this fact provided the inspiration for his survey of the aircraft industry which takes you back to the early days of aviation in Greater London, even if you were not there originally.
In 1949 before we had celebrated even fifty years of powered flight the founder of Handley Page Ltd, Sir Frederick Handley Page wrote; "It is difficult for us to gauge the place in which our era will ultimately hold in the history of mankind. In no sphere of human activity has development been so rapid as in the art of flying. Through the past four decades of practical flying, run many stories of pioneer work done, of disappointmaets and successes, but, with it all, continuing progress." This book encapsulates many of these stories, although as we approach the centenary in December 2003 of the Wright brothers' first flight aviation tends to be taken for granted. However we must never forget our aviation heritage, because without the past there would be no future. I would urge everyone to buy a copy so they can help to care for the past and draw inspiration from it for the future.
