3.0 out of 5 stars Good nostalgia trip, slightly compromised by inaccuracies, 1 Dec 2003
By Andrew Howard (Australia) - See all my reviews
This book is a somewhat esoteric subject and may only appeal to ex-employees of the Corby works or current residents of the area. The reviewer is in the first category of interested readers. Apart from a short introduction the book is entirely a photographic record, a large number of these having been taken by the author in the last few years of operation.

These photographs are an excellent record of all facets of the Corby iron and steelmaking process. In this, there are omissions and also overrepresentation of other areas. For example, the No. 2 Strip Mill and the Lancs & Corby cold rolling operations get no mention, whereas there are no less than 10 photographs of the insides of the gasholders.

The captions are comprehensive and very informative, the author has a great deal of knowledge of the operations, and also has taken good advice from other parties. Unfortunately this aspect is hindered because of inaccuracies. These inaccuracies would only be obvious to those who had worked in, or are particularly familiar with some of the processes. Because the book will mainly appeal to those who have this very experience or interest, informed readers will find Corby Iron and Steel Works a flawed, but worthwhile document about a vital industry, that is now just a fading memory.
