Product Description

Book Description
A warts-and-all history of Airdrieonians Football Club, one of the oldest and arguably most successful football clubs in Scotland. The most definitive account of its existence to date.

Expertly interweaves pictures and text to tell the story of the club's 124-year existence, which came to an abrupt end on May 1 2002 at the hands of KPMG, administrators for the previous two years and more.

From the Author
This is the most definitive history to date of Airdrieonians Football Club, one of Scotland's oldest and arguably most successful senior clubs.

Airdrieonians gained some notoriety in May 2002 as the first Scottish senior club to go out of business since Third Lanark in 1967. That notoriety lifted Airdrieonians from the back pages of Scotland's national newspapers and placed it firmly on the front pages. Even the Financial Times covered the story, underlining the breadth and depth of its appeal.

Images of Sport: Airdrieonians Football Club chronicles the history of the club from before its conception to after its death, a 124-year long tale of hope and despair, success and failure, life and death, and life again.

Anyone with an interest in football, whether as fan, player, manager, official or club director, will find this an engaging case study in what to do to, and, perhaps more importantly, in what not to do. Don't let your grasp exceed your reach. Don't let short-term results become more important than long-term strategy. Don't neglect your grass roots. Don't sell your stadium and move out without a home to go to.

The club which has arisen from the ashes, Airdrie United, is the first to benefit from the undebated introduction of a de facto franchise system into Scottish football (after failing to win election to the Scottish League, Airdrie United simply bought another ailing club, Clydebank FC, whose only asset was a place in the Scottish League Second Division, and shut them down).

The unfortunate events surrounding the demise of Airdrieonians and the birth of Airdrie United give the book a unique status, enhancing its appeal to social historians and football followers the length and breadth of the UK, as well as in Airdrie.

Airdrieonians are associated with many historic moments:
the first penalty in world football took place at their ground in 1891 (diagram included);
the worst ever home defeat suffered by Glasgow Rangers was at the hands of Airdrieonians (2-10 in 1886; match report included);
the first penalty shoot-out in world football took place at Airdrie's ground in September 1971, when the home team beat Nottingham Forest (pictures included).

It is packed with stories, photos and other images that reek of social and economic history as well as footballing history. The elegance and eloquence of some of the early accounts of the club's activities and match reports put much modern literature to shame.

I hope readers will share my enthusiasm for what has been an enjoyable and cathartic labour of love,

Best regards to all.

Brian Bollen

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, 25 Jan 2003
This is a fascinating book - a gem. I was born and bred in Airdrie, so this book held me enchanted for a number of reasons. First, it is extremely well researched. Congratulations to Brian for his thoroughness and eye for detail. Secondly it is very well written - it is simply a pleasure to read. Thirdly it is about Airdrieonians FC - the underdog that wouldn't roll over and die. The club that always seemed to pull out the stops just when it needed to and put on a dazzling display of determination. Finally it brings back so many memories of the town itself with its use of maps and photos.

Every true son and daughter of Airdrie should own a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Images of Sport: Airdrieonians Football Club, 5 Nov 2002
By Gordon Thomson (Airdrie Scotland) - See all my reviews
This new pictorial history of Airdrieonians FC is certainly a more comprehensive read than other club history book released over a decade ago for more than just the simple fact that it covers more time. Brian's book is a far more colourful and indepth look at our distinguished past. There is a wealth of interesting photos and memorabilia from the beginning, archive stories, footage and reports, till the bitter end. Not to mention the glorious 120 odd years in between. One of the features of this book is the range of personal testimonies of generations past that bring our past to life.

I have found it difficult to put this book down since first attempting a brief read at it. I thought I'd have known it all but have been surprised with just how deep Brian must have dug to bring this project to life. I was expecting chapter and verse on the last couple of years but Brian has delicately sidestepped the politics in the context of the book and his decision to do so probably lets the book have an enjoyable atmosphere that makes it a must read for all Airdrie fans and neutrals alike.

Whether you want to read about the 1924 cup team in depth, Stanley Matthews and what Bobby Flavell really made of it, Ian McMillan's career - what would we give to have that kind of quality again?, Whiteford and the Texaco Cup years, etc., this book has it in wonderful grapic detail. The younger fans especially will probably be overwhelmed by a history in pictures that have left me feeling humbled by the scale of what has been achieved in years gone by.

Our historical wee team may well be gone but Airdrieonians contribution to world football will live on as long as the game itself. Just read about it if you don't know. The team lives on in the spirit of the fans and the Diamonds of Jim Ballantyne's Airdrie United, but Brian's book provides some closure on the end of part one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn good book, 2 Nov 2002
By Colin Anderson (lucky) (Bellshill, Lanarkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Basically, if you haven't got it yet, then go get it. It is a great book and tells of many things that most people won't know.

The introduction alone is enough to bring a tear to die hard Airdrie fans. With a statement like the following, it is easy to see why.

"This author duly said goodby to control of his sanity, his wallet and his Saturday afternoons, and bid hello to frequent heartache and occasional despair"

This book is great and is a must read for ALL Airdrie fans and even those who are not fans.

The book covers the entire history of the club and brings your attention to the many historical moments enjoyed in Airdrie.
