1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful , 1 Dec 2007
By T. Weldon (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This really is a dreadful book, and yet it could, and should, have been an excellent celebration of Ipswich Town. The concept was really good too but it just hasn't been executed. The write-ups about many of the players are almost laughable. Half the time the text meanders on about other things totally unrelated to the player in question. When each player is only given 1 or 2 pages (including a photograph or two), you can begin to understand just how transparent the descriptions are. They are very poorly written too - the sort of writing you would expect from a 12 year old - and this guy is supposed to be a journalist (who, incidentally, has apparantly had much access to the club and it's players). There are several places where the book seems to be more about the author than the players of Ipswich Town. That's fine, but write another book about it. This book is supposed to be a celebration of the club's best 100 players, and why they are considered the best.
The book also gets off to a pessimistic start in the introduction when Tony Garnett totally loses the purpose by telling the reader how much Ipswich's two quality international managers - Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson - apparantly disliked each other. This may well have been the case, but this book is not the place to vent such controversy. I was so depressed reading the introduction that I was almost put off continuing with the rest. With hindsight I wish I hadn't bothered because it was a total let down. The club I love deserves much better.

Finally, the price for such a poorly produced book - several grammatical and printing errors and all black and white photographs - is also a total rip off. Avoid like the plague and wait for someone to do a better job. It wouldn't be that hard, believe me.
