Product Description

From the Author

Why are you continuing to place restrictions on the availability of this book? After taking weeks and weeks for any information to appear at all, you then specify only used copies, then you impose a handling charge and an availability of 4-6 weeks, now you change that to 1-2 months. What is going on? Is this your fault or the fault of the publisher? I signed the contract to write the book two years ago and it was published in July. What is the reason for this long delay? Tempus' other books appear on your website with immediate availability, why not this one?

5.0 out of 5 stars Transcends the Genre, 16 Nov 2004
Jonathan Strange, a life-long devotee of Coventry City, here puts together an account of fifty memorable games. It's a dull and formulaic brief, one might think, but it is remarkable what a good job he makes of it. The games are placed not only in footballing but social contexts, players come alive, the action is described without recourse to cliche or boring paraphrase. The book is a model of what an intelligent and thoughtful commentator can make of even the most intractable material. You certainly don't have to be a City fan to appreciate the quality of observation and judgment that makes this a genuinely compelling read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Football writing at its best, 1 Nov 2004
By Philip de Bary (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Never mind 'Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell' - this Jonathan Strange is one of our best football writers, and here he's given us a hugely enjoyable book. It will appeal to three kinds of reader: (a) Coventry City fans will find a wealth of detail and anecdote about the figures who have shaped their club's history; (b) partisans of other teams will find an off-beat (and often very funny) history of English football from the 1890s to the present day; (c) the general reader will find a wry, reflective chronicle of how England itself made the journey from Victorian times to the twenty-first century, mirrored in the evolving story of its national game. This is a book I'll be buying all my friends for Christmas, whether they're Sky Blues fans or not.
