I read this book in preparation for my A-Level examinations along with many other books on the subject. Without a doubt this is the most comprehensive and quite simply the best book on the subject which i read. Lawson considers primary sources and evaluates nearly all available on the subject, arriving at considered conclusions and convincing ones. He writes on the make-up of the Norman and English armies in great detail, highlighting the difference between them. Of particular interest is his scrutiny of the Bayeux Tapestry and the conventional idea on how Harold Godwinson was killed. he propogates an alternative theory to the conventional "arrow in the eye" and his argument is extremely convincing. this book changed my view on the Battle and is perfect for students of History as well as learned historians as Lawson writes in great detail, supported by primary evidence and he uses carefully selected maps and photographs of the battlefield to support his argument. this book is far better than any other on the subject, containing far more convincing arguments than Bradbury for example, and is a must-read for any historians interested in one of the most famous battles in English history.

Having had the pleasure of being taught by Kenny Lawson, I believe that I am in a strong position to review his writing. His thorough style of ripping through both primary and secondary sources till only shreds remain, results in a comprehensive and well informed read. Although his intention of staying away from narrative often feels forced, Lawson manages to offer some exceptional analysis. Of note is the historians knowledge of the battlefield (and surrounding barlife!), and his peculiar finding of 'mounds' on the outskirts. This provides a new argument to this age old subject. No doubt Lawson has been at his Lindisfarne bottles again!
