No doubt there are many academics and historians turning in their ivory towers at this book - how dare someone give the entire history of a nation in a book you can read in 48hours.

But the author has, in the main, pulled this off without going down the route of dumbing-down or just selecting the best bits of history.

Here is a story of a people that hangs together well as a story - it leaves you with a sense that you've got a high-level but complete picture of Scotland. The main events and transistions flow together logically here.

Also, it's not a book that dwells on romanticism, and instead provides a more balanced view of what was important to the people at any point in time. For example, the Battle of Culloden gets a single sentence, whereas the linen industry gets the best part of a whole page. It also avoids laboriously going through the detail of all monarchs and battles, which other Scottish historical overviews tend to relish.

While there may be nothing new in the content of this book, it does act as a good launch pad to go and explore areas of specific interest.
