5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!, 7 Mar 2003
By Roy Betts (New York) - See all my reviews
This is an original and romantic view of speedway and of its West Ham roots. Lots of interesting detail, and such an nice change from the usual dirge of statistics. So, if you are a popeyed, speedway stats nut stay away, but if you are a lover of the unusual and have a need to be lifted by a book this one is for you.

The book is full of some wonderful photos and Belton's family links to West Ham come through well, giving 'Hammerin' Round' a life rarely found in sporting books and hardly ever in the boring, tedious fact files that drag the history of the sport into the mundane.

Thank you Tempus and thank you Brian Belton

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - completely absorbing, 8 Mar 2003
By Youtha Ula (Norfolk) - See all my reviews
This is a truely different sporting book, full of the best kind of passionate writing and taking the reader on a journey - fine detail, balanced with humour and pathos. This is a true east ender's point of view, a fan and not an anorak...do yourself a favour and read it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny. Sad, Interesting and Intelligent, 7 Mar 2003
This is a book that will make you laugh, cry and, above all think! It seems the writer is the thinking person's sports nut. He tells a wonderful tale, in a way that I have not come across before when looking at this type of book, this makes the finished product both refreshing and informative. I have read all of Belton's books and this fits in with his style and verve. Read it if you are an open minded person and if you are one of those creeps that lurks around sports books counters reading the appendices, best try something else dear. Incidently Belton does mention the Cundy Trophy, which in its day was not seen in the same light as the big solo titles or the league and the edition I read was faultless factually. Most of the photos have never been published before.

I really hope there is more like this on the way.
