Product Description

Book Description

It can be precisely dated, can tell us about the diet, economy and even ritual acts of prehistoric people and is often richly decorated. As this new study convincingly shows, pottery can tell us more about prehistoric society than any other artefact.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great grounding in prehistoric pottery, 21 Dec 2004
I chose to buy this book as I read a lot about prehistoric britain, and was getting confused as to the pottery deposits which were being found on various digs.

This book can be quite technical, however as a lay person I understood it easily, and I hope that if I found some ancient pottery I may be able to identify it!!

I recommend this book as it talks about not only the pottery but the firing skills and how the clay was mixed in different areas.

Essential reading for the ameteur archaeologist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prehistoric pottery, 5 Jul 2009
As an archaeologist, I found this book fascinating. I think its really useful how the first few sections place the prehistoric pottery into a context by providing the reader with an understanding of how the pottery is made and how the decoration techniques were created so that when you look at a piece of prehistoric pottery in the field or in the finds lab, you are able to understand it not just as a piece of pot, but the craft behind it.

This book is a good source if you wish to begin to understand prehistoric pottery and would suit more the person who is an archaeologist or student in archaeology,
