Product Description

Reviews

'...provides a valuable corrective to much previous writing on the reign...It is a powerful and passionate work, rich in new insights. Nothing of comparable importance has been written on the reign for the past thirty years.' [Nigel Saul, History Today]

'...instantly accessible to the uninformed layman...Ormrod's Edward is...a hard-boiled realist and political consolidator, shoring up the throne left tottering on its foundations by his hapless father.' [Jonathan Keates, The Observer]

Nigel Saul, History Today

Compelling and eloquently written… Nothing of comparable importance has been written on the reign for the past thirty years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book that lays out a reign of a great king, 25 Oct 2009
The Reign of Edward III is a good book for the outline and details of Edward's era on the throne. It sets up a great thesis on how Edward kept his ministers, his clergy, his representitives, his enemies, his allys, his family, and his wars in check. So this is a nice study.

However, I should start with my expectations of the book when I bought it. I thought I was buying a biography. This is not a biography. It is a life and times book. It describes Edward's life, but it gives more details to his period on the throne rather that the man himself. Other than this, good book.

First off is the first three periods of Edward's life: The Early Years, The Middle Years, and the Later Years. Next Ormrod analzies the King, the Magnates, The Ministers, and the Clergy. The book is mainly about Edward's relationships with his government, the church officals, and the great lords of the realm. In all these relationships, Edward is protrayed as a master keeper of decorm. Yes, Ormrod says that his behavior during the 'Crisis of 1341' was very harsh, and I agree, but he also adds that Edward still presides over England as a whole. Ormrod brought everything together that he had already wrote on the king and he always kept Edward III in the forefront.

Ormrod's study of Edward III is a good addition to any medieval collection. A very interesting read I assure you
